I’ve only been to Lyr once, and that’s enough for me. Its like you walked into another world. A primitive, brutish, crude, and terribly hot other world. I got nervous just looking at the city: spiked iron walls stretching between the canyon sides, badly made catapults all aimed at me, shifty looking men in strange animal hides with curved swords leering at me as I strode up. Come to think of it, those might have been the guards. But I wouldn’t let that stop me.

Once inside the city I wasn’t quite sure where to start. A cold drink sounded like a good idea (did I mention how hot it was?), and there were plenty of taverns. Wandering around town feeling none too refreshed I learned the one thing about this place that makes it so special: thieving is so common its a damn profession! Some traders charge a thieves tax on their wares to make up for stolen goods, others hire thieves to steal back their goods. Some ARE thieves selling stolen goods. Still, its an exciting place, full of life, if not the best kind of life. I wouldn’t want to live here, and I’m happy to put my back to it, and I can’t help but wonder if that kid who picked my pocket liked what he got.

Leuda is a land without law. The only justice served is the justice of the streets. For generations the deserts have been a refuge for those seeking escape for one reason or another. There is a widespread perception that all Leudites are criminals, but that’s only half true; people in Leuda really just like their freedom, they’re pretty dang good at keeping it.

Dotting the barren landscape are crude settlements filled with rough people that have carved out their own lifestyle in the harsh environment. These enclaves are often built as fortresses to ward off attacks, and to protect natural resources (usually water). Within the walls exists very little form of government, if there is any at all. However, most settlements have one or two exceptionally influential individuals.

Life can be rough in the desert. In general, criminals are common, and justice is harsh. Only the most hardy (or foolish) of caravan merchants will risk the journey, and this forces city-states to be mostly autonomous. This reason alone is why Lyr, one of the oldest settlements, has lasted as long, and become the unofficial capitol: it sits in an oasis on a major river and sells fresh water and fruit at exorbitant prices further into the desert. Lyr even sports its own self-proclaimed leader, which is a first and has caused unrest among the territories in recent years.

The people that make up Leuda are a unique bunch. What started as a bid for freedom turned into a full-fledged anarchist society. You’ll find everything from common criminals to druids to exiles. The land may not offer much, but for those who want to live their life truly free, there is no better place than Leuda.
