Belegost is the seat of all dwarven politics in Illia. While smaller pockets of dwarves make a living elsewhere, the public face of the race is in Belegost. Each clan elects a leader, all of whom form the republic that creates and upholds the law. To balance the council, a king, chosen by the prior king, exists to make swift decisions when the council cannot. Along with the Voice of the Earth, who is the spiritual and religious leader for the dwarves. Kings are always male, and the Voice of the Earth is always female.

For the last 3 generations the dwarves have been going through an industrial revolution, developing wondrous technological machines and tools, the most wide-spread of which is the airship. Currently, dwarves are split into 2 political groups:

  • Iron Dwarves – Are the current majority right now. They believe that their race’s future is through the development of steam and combustion powered machines.
  • Earthen Dwarves – Opposite of the Iron Dwarves. They hold that the current use of steam and oil powered machines is tarnishing the proud tradition of dwarves, and believe in the primal traditions of their race.

Political tension between these two groups has risen a lot in the recent years, following several anti-industrial attacks. Many are worried that a civil war may break out between the two sides.
